St Andrew, Althorne, Essex
St Andrew’s church in Althorne, Essex, dates back to the late 14th century. The chancel was added to the nave in the 16th century and the tower in 1500. The south porch is 18th century. The chancel was altered in the 20th century.
Most of the graffiti at the church is found etched into the lead lining of the fine, 1400’s font. There are several Marian marks, although it is not possible to say whether they are M’s or VV’s.
The only other graffiti is on the buttress immediately west of the south porch. There is one clear scratch dial with two more worn examples above it. There are also some initials on the same buttress.
St Andrew’s is not open to the public at the moment. The church has major structural issues which need fixing. Fortunately they have secured National Lottery funding to carry out the repairs. My sincere thanks go to Lucien and Peter who gave up their time to let me look around.
