All Saints, Brightlingsea, Essex
All Saints church, Brightlingsea, stands on a hill just outside the seaside town where it has operated as a landmark for centuries. The chancel dates back to the 13th century, with the south aisle dating to the 15th century and the south door to the 16th century. Seafaring is part of the fabric of the church with the poignant Tiles of Tragedy frieze detailing the Brightlingsea sailors lost at sea over many centuries.
The interior of the church does not contain a lot of graffiti but there is a daisy wheel on a column facing the south door with concentric circles and compass circles on nearby columns. There are also interesting mason’s marks further toward the altar. An IHS monogram is scratched into the outer doorway of the south porch
The rest of the graffiti is made up of names and initials, these are mostly behind the organ and on the south porch and west doorway.
